Comics Arts Conference Session #1: Introduction to Graphic Medicine
"Graphic Medicine" is a term coined in 2009 by UK physician and artist Ian Williams to refer to the intersection between the medium of comics and the discourse on health care. Since then, a diverse group of scholars, comic artists, patients, and health-care providers have been engaged in dialogue about how comics might further our understanding of the health-care system and those who interact with it. Dr. Michael Green (Penn State Hershey College and Medicine) and M. K. Czerwiec (Northwestern Feinberg Medical School), two of the pioneers of the field and the organizers of five international conferences on graphic medicine, will describe and share some of the rich body of work that now exists at the intersection of comics and medicine, exploring the rationale for the use of comics in medicine, ways comics have been integrated into medical education, and how that intersection might benefit health-care providers and patients alike.

In the process, he highlights the benefits of collaboration in the creation of narrative visualizations while raising an awareness of the accessibility of graphic novels. Renee Krusemark (Creighton University) builds on theories that reading graphic narratives involves both leadership and critical thinking, and uses The Walking Dead as a case study to explore how readers perceive leadership in comics and to discuss the potential of using comic books in the college classroom to address student critical thinking and leadership perceptions.

Comic Book Law School(R): In The Beginning
Every project has a starting point, but not considering all of the important business issues from the start can cause you more damage than being caught in a flood with your ark half built. Luckily, the popular Comic Book Law School will help by supplying the ABCs of legal protections for creators, and maybe help you discover how to make protecting yourself an everyday part of the creative process. Noted IP attorney Michael Lovitz, author of The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, sets down a solid foundation on intellectual property in this informative seminar. Starting with the basics on the ownership and protection of ideas, an understanding of copyright and trademark rights, including for works of authorship, characters, and names, this seminar will help guide you from conception through publication and beyond. Attendees are invited to participate in an interactive discussion about basic rights provided under U.S. copyright and trademark laws, as well as the registration process for each (and time permitting, how recent court decisions and changes in the law could affect those rights). Along the way, there will be plenty to learn about the protections, and pitfalls, of the U.S. trademark and copyright systems. Please note: The Comic Book Law School seminars are designed to provide relevant information and practice tips to practicing attorneys, as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend. However, the seminar is presented for information and entertainment purposes only, and the information presented and opinions expressed at the seminars do not constitute legal advice and should not be relied upon as such . Zombicide Demonstrations
Zombicide: Slipping between buildings, ducking behind rubble, and scavenging for anything that might keep them alive just a little bit longer, a group of survivors navigate the streets of a dilapidated city now overrun by a mindless horde of zombies. This is Zombicide, the board game that lets 1–6 players live out their zombie survival nightmare! Players take control of one of six survivors, who each have their own special abilities and skill trees. Using unique and clever mechanics, Zombicide is designed as a fully cooperative game where no player has to play as the zombies. Zombies are controlled by a small set of simple rules that dictate that they must chase after the closest thing they see, or the loudest place on the board. This allows players to fully immerse themselves in the game where they can trick zombies, set traps, and make daring escapes. And while running can help these survivors get out of a tough spot, the only way they can truly win is by destroying the zombies and committing large amounts of Zombicide!

Anima Tactics Demonstrations
Anima Tactics is a 30mm miniature skirmish game conceived as a combination of Japanese and Western art, myth, and styles of play. It offers innovative rules and background that incorporate the most striking elements of both styles. Anima's style is manga, but that doesn't mean it lacks any of the elements every diehard, role-playing card game or miniatures fan expects in a game. Several great Japanese illustrators, whose work has appeared in well-known videogames and animated series, have collaborated on the project with European authors. The result is a refreshing visual blend we are sure will please even the most discriminating gamer.

Please allow 1 hour for game demonstrations. Ages 13+. All materials will be provided. This item is for general scheduling purposes only.

Comics Arts Conference Session #8: Sex, Love, & Superheroes
Intimate relationships have figured prominently in superhero stories from the beginning, when Superman slammed a wife beater into the wall and then Clark asked Lois out on a date in 1938's Action Comics #1. Even the proto-superheroes, those larger-than-life heroes whose adventures preceded the dawn of the costumed crusaders, frequently found themselves motivated by their relationships, from "Me Tarzan, You Jane" to "Oh, Popeye!" changes in depictions of relationships not only reflect the defining qualities of each major era of comic book history but often figure prominently in the issues that end one era and begin the next. Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight), Molly Mahan (Dynamite Entertainment), Alan Kistler (Wired), Abby Dark-star (KeAbtium), and Jenna Busch (Fan Voice) trace the evolution of sex and love through the history of superhero comics.

Full-Time Creative Work on a Part-Time Schedule
Having a goal, a good idea, discipline, and skills is only the start of what you need for your project to succeed. Knowing the basics of group dynamics, forming then working with a group without mortally wounding each other is the difference between success or failure of your projects, and possibly friendships too. No matter which industry (comics, illustration, movies, Webcomics, design or animation, costuming or cosplay), "breaking in" has never been a more apt term than in today's media. It is a full-time job, and you only have part-time hours to accomplish it. Topics covered pertain to any group with a goal, from hobbyist to professional purposes as well as any interest of geek or creative culture. Topics cover a myriad of organizational subjects: different kinds of leadership that match your groups needs, the importance of starting everyone on the same page and how to keep everyone there, how to build your team, a variety of angles on deadlines and work environments. The panelists represent a broad cross section of levels of authority, departments, work pipelines, and sizes of organizations and come from a variety of media, including illustration, writing, design, animation, podcasting, and live-action film production. Topher Davila (art director, GeekdomWear), Sean Glumace (digital arts instructor at Golden West College), Aleister Gilgrim (creative director, ICS Mobile), Brendan Creecy (Radio BrendoMan podcast), Victoria Irwin (managing editor, TheGeekGirlProject.com), Cat Smith (voice actress, CatSmith.net), Ron Coleman (molecular geneticist and writer), Keith Wolzinger (Klezmer Podcast) and Mario Martinez (co-creator, TomatoTV), provide unique content that is a mix of speaking, questions, and some short interactive applications where the audience can directly apply the information covered.
